David Axe, War Is Boring: The U.S. Navy Doesn't Seem to Care That The F-35 Can't Dogfight

To the sailing branch, the stealth fighter is a sensor.

In trials off the California coast in January 2015, a 1980s-vintage U.S. Air Force F-16 repeatedly defeated one of the flying branch's brand-new F-35A Joint Strike Fighter stealth jets in mock dogfights. "The F-35 was at a distinct energy disadvantage," the unnamed JSF pilot wrote in a scathing five-page brief that War Is Boring obtained.

The test report is the latest proof that the F-35 — which Lockheed Martin is developing for the U.S. Air Force, Navy and Marines and a host of American allies — is an inferior fighter in close combat compared to much older planes. Complex and heavy, the JSF "can't turn, can't climb, can't run," to quote one infamous 2008 war game report.

But the U.S. Navy — the third-largest purchaser of F-35s — seems unperturbed. Indeed, in recent planning the Navy describes the JSF less as a traditional fighter than as radar-evading, flying sensor and communications node.

The Navy apparently doesn't care that its F-35C version of the stealth jet — as well as the Marines' F-35B model — is a poor performer in raw kinetic terms. In the sailing branch's evolving battle scheme, the JSF will focus on finding targets … for older F/A-18 fighters and missile-armed warships to shoot down.

President Muhammadu Buhari said he would not make compromised citizens and 'hostages' ministers. Mr. President said this on Monday July 27th in a live programme, Good Morning Nigeria, on the Nigerian Television Authority.

President Buhari said he needed decent, patriotic and hard-working technocrats as well as politicians to work with him in order to achieve his dream of repositioning the country. According to Buhari , the worst thing that could happen to his administration was to get compromised persons to be in charge of institutions, adding that such people would be ineffective and unpatriotic. The President said :

"We will try as much as possible to avoid appointing hostages; by this, I mean people who have been in the system but compromised their personal and professional integrity,From what I have seen so far, we need very patriotic Nigerians (to be ministers); Nigerians that can work very hard with knowledgeable experience; committed Nigerians to be in charge of ministries.A lot of institutions in Nigeria are compromised, everybody for himself and God for all of us. It is most unfortunate. We have people, educated and experienced people, but everybody seems to be working for himself on how much they could get away with as soon as possible.

"We have to look for technocrats and politicians. We have to look out for decent people in this class to give them the responsibility of being in charge of ministries and important parastatals.It is taking so much time (to appoint ministers) because a number of knowledgeable people have been compromised. They have been compromised by people who will like to depend on them to damage our economy and security; a lot of them have been compromised.

"The worst thing that I think can happen is to get a compromised person to be in charge of institutions. There is no way he could be efficient or patriotic. Somebody behind the scene will be manipulating him at the expense of the nation.This is what we are trying to avoid and I assure you that so much damage has been done to Nigeria. We cannot rush to give this responsibility to people that have unfortunately been compromised.

"This is because there is no way you can effectively supervise, let's say 20 ministries, you have to give it to people you trust and you allow them to perform according to the Constitution of the country. If you appoint compromised people, then we will be back to square one and Nigeria will be the loser."

Edo State Governor, Adams Oshiomhole has revealed that the PDP-led government of former President Goodluck Jonathan had destroyed Nigeria.

Oshiomhole, who was on the entourage of President Muhammadu Buhari to the United States revealed this to the State House correspondents shortly after meeting with Buhari at the Presidential Villa, Abuja on Monday July 27th . He said :

"The PDP destroyed the country. I mean from the lips of American officials; senior officials of the State Department said one minister under PDP cornered as much as $6bn.The man said even by Washington's standard, that is earth-shattering.

"So, the PDP is a party that presided over the liquidation of our nation, destroyed all our institutions, converted the Armed Forces commanders to use them as if they were political thugs, converted the Nigerian Television Authority to a party megaphone, destroyed the Department of State Services, went after opposition as if we were rabbits to be pursued into our holes, compromised even student unions and destroyed everything that you can think of, and elevated religion to a state affair.Under the party, Israel became a place you visit every week; they placed pastors against mallams, placed the North against the South, the East against the West, just to retain power; elevate Obas and Obis with dollars.

"You guys (journalists) were reporting dollars that were changing hands; when the Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation was spending much more money than is available to the Federation Account. We are a very patient people. If we were not a patient people, anybody wearing the tag of PDP ought to feel very unsafe because you are all victims — all of us here.Mr. Johnnie Carson, who was the Assistant Secretary of State, when we visited him in company with Senator (Bukola) Saraki, then as the Chairman of the Nigeria Governors' Forum — that was at the eve of President Obama's first visit to Africa — and we went to complain, 'why is Nigeria not on the list?'

"What he said, for me, was quite instructive compared to what he said last week. Then I was present when he said 'you know, we, who see ourselves not just as friends of Nigeria, each time we think there is light at the end of the tunnel and it is time to encourage Nigeria to build on it, you would wake up the following day under President Jonathan to find out that even the tunnel had been removed.'

"Those were the words of Mr. Carson. Now last week, this same Carson chaired the President's address at the Institute of Peace and he said 'we now have a man of enormous integrity; one that has shown so much faith in the democratic process; one that refused to be frustrated even in the face of massively rigged elections. He submitted to the judicial process and even when that was compromised he never gave up.

"America has done its check and we are convinced that this President is the one that Nigeria needs at this time to regain its leadership of the African continent."

An alleged faked Medical Doctor, Martins Okpe, an employee of the Federal Ministry of Health, has been arraigned before a Federal High Court in Abuja, Nigeria’s capital city.

Mr Okpe was arraigned on a five-counts charge for impersonation and stealing of a Bachelor of Medicine Degree of the Ahmadu Bello University, Zaira.

In the criminal charge where he pleaded not guilty, Okpe was also alleged to have stolen a Bachelor of Surgery Degree and National Youth Service Corps certificates belonging to another Dr Daniel George.

Having taken his plea, the accused person moved a bail application through his counsel, urging the Court to grant him bail in liberal terms, a position that was not opposed by the prosecution.

Drawing Monthly Salary

The Court consequently admitted the accused person to bail in the sum of one million Naira, two sureties of which one must not be lower than level 12 in any Federal Government Agency.

The accused was to be remanded in Kuje Prison custody, pending when he would perfect his bail conditions.

Martins, 44, was employed as a Senior Medical Officer in 2006 on grade level 12 with the Federal Ministry of Health, where he was alleged to have been drawing monthly salary and allowances.

He was apprehended during the verification exercise of professional skills of Residence Doctors conducted by the Medical And Dental Council Of Nigeria, where he presented the certificate in June to secure clearance.

The offense is contrary to Section 383 and punishable under Section 390 of the Criminal Code.

Ambassadors from 28 Nato countries are holding an emergency meeting in Brussels to discuss Turkey’s military campaign against the Islamic State and Kurdish militants.

Turkey was a reluctant partner in the U.S. coalition against ISIS, but over the past few days, it had bombed ISIS and Kurdish positions.

Turkey is also backing plans for a buffer zone on the border with Syria.

Prime Minister, Ahmet Davutoglu, said that he expected his country’s allies to show solidarity and support for its campaign.

The U.S. and Turkey are working together on plans to create an “ISIS-free zone” along the border with Syria.

Meanwhile, Turkish police have continued to arrest suspected members of the ISIS, PKK and leftist groups.

They have, however, arrested more than 1,000 suspects over the past week.

A Federal High Court in Abuja, has refused to grant an ex parte order, seeking to stop the Senate President, Bukola Saraki, from constituting the Senate Standing Committees.

Ruling on the application filed by five senators opposed to the leadership of the Senate on Tuesday, Justice Gabriel Kolawole held that there was nothing urgent in the application of the plaintiffs .

The court said the Senate Standing Order 2015, as amended, which the plaintiffs predicated their application, had been in existence since June 9, when the Senate President and his Deputy were elected.

Justice Kolawole said that the issue of urgency raised by the five Senators was self inflicted.

He stressed that the plaintiffs rushed to the court, 24 hours to the resumption of the Senate to stop its proceedings.

But the court would not oblige the request .

Justice Kolawole warned that when the National Assembly has misapplied its own rules ,the courts must be wary in intervening, it should even be more wary when the intervention is sought as an ex parte.

He, however, held that the Senate Standing Order 2015 as amended, had no substantial infraction on the 1999 Constitution to warrant courts intervention.

He ordered the plaintiffs to put on notice, the defendants in the suit which include the Senate President, Deputy Senate President and the Clerk of the National Assembly.

The case was, however, adjourned to August 5 .

Stephen Cook, Council on Foreign Relations: Turkey, Syria, and the United States: Quagmires Are Us

This weekend Turkey and the United States took steps toward getting more heavily involved in the Syrian quagmire. First, after a year of protracted negotiations, Turkey agreed to allow the United States to use Incirlik airbase to conduct operations against the so-called Islamic State. In return, the Obama administration has agreed to the establishment of a "safe zone" in northwestern Syria that "moderate Syrian opposition forces" would protect along with Turkish and American airpower. Second, Turkey undertook airstrikes against Islamic State positions in Syria and the forces of the Kurdistan Workers' Party (PKK) in northern Iraq.

The early reaction has focused almost exclusively on Ankara's sudden interest in combatting the Islamic State and the establishment of safe zones as potential "game changers" in the fight against Islamic State leader Abu Bakr al-Baghdadi and the Assad regime. In reality this effort is likely to achieve much less than expected. It is true that the Turks have gotten more serious about the threat of the Islamic State, especially since the Suruc bombing on July 20, but Ankara, which has grown increasingly uncomfortable as the Kurds have made gains against Islamic State forces in Syria, is primarily interested in suppressing Kurdish nationalism.

Patrick Cockburn, The Independent: Turkey conflict with Kurds: Was approving air strikes against the PKK America's worst error in the Middle East since the Iraq War?

Kurdish guerrillas have killed two Turkish soldiers in an ambush in south-east Turkey as fighting resumes between Turkish security forces and Kurdish militants, ending a two-year-old ceasefire. The attack came after Turkish aircraft heavily bombed bases of the Kurdistan Workers Party (PKK) in the Qandil Mountains in northern Iraq.

In a sign that the PKK has resumed military operations against the government, a Turkish army vehicle on a road near Diyarbakir, the largest Kurdish city, was hit by bomb blasts followed by rifle fire, according to the army. A further four soldiers were wounded in the attack.

WNU Editor: President Obama's administration has alienated all of America's traditional allies in the Middle East .... Israel, Egypt, Saudi Arabia, the Gulf States .... I guess the Kurds are the next group. There is going to be blow-back on this decision .... and I suspect the first casualty will be the "neutering" of the only military force (i.e. Kurdish forces) that have been successful in stopping the rise and expansion of the Islamic State in the Middle East.

The sitting of a seven-man committee set up to look into the petition filed by Justice Folahanmi Oloyede, indicting the Osun State Governor, Rauf Aregbesola, on account of financial recklessness suffered a setback on Tuesday, as the petitioner failed to appear before the committee for defence.

After Justice Oloyede filed the petition, the committee asked the petitioner, ‎who is a serving Judge in the State, to appear before it with facts backing the petition sent to the State House of Assembly on June 19.

In the petition, Justice Oloyede had accused the Governor and his Deputy, Titilayo Tomori-Laoye, of mismanaging the state’s funds and therefore called for their Impeachment.

The day had started with heavy presence of security personnel at the entrance of the Osun State House of Assembly on Wednesday in expectation that the sitting will hold.

It was not a day for the usual legislators’ Plenary Session, as the gate to the House of Assembly was shut and everyone had to be screened before going in.

‎But when the committee commenced sitting, the petitioner did not appear instead she sent in representatives, a development that led to a mild drama at the venue, which forced the committee into a closed-door meeting with the representatives of the petitioner.

After the meeting, a representative of the petitioner, Lanre Ogunlesi, told reporters that the petitioner could only appear before the panel with her defence if the response of the respondent was given to the petitioner.

Legal experts, who spoke to Channels Television, commented on the representatives views.

They said the committee, headed by Akintunde Adegboye, was mandated by law to forward the respondent’s answer to the petitioner

The committee has only two days left to make the two weeks deadline given to it to submit its report to the State House of Assembly‎.

However, there have been allegations and counter-allegations from various quarters on the credibility of the committee set up comprising of only lawmakers that are members of the All Progressives Congress in the House.

Governor Aregbesola is one of the governors owing State workers salary across Nigeria, which the Governors had blamed on the reduced allocation from the Federation Account.

The war against the Islamic State just widened to include Turkey as a combatant. The Obama administration has long tried to persuade the Islamic government of RecipTayip Erdoğan to get into the fray, but the vital question still needs to be asked: Is this "game-changer," as one U.S. official calls it, a good thing or a bad thing?

There's no simple answer, but on balance, this development offers a little short-term good and a lot of long-term bad.

With 34-year-old Terry's career with Chelsea winding down, club boss Jose Mourinho has tipped Nigerian John Obi Mikel to replace him as the Blues' captain.

The Super Eagles star has over 224 caps with four goals since he move to Chelsea from Norwegian side, Lyn in 2006 . Mourinho told Mail Online in an exclusive interview , when asked to name Terry's likely replacement :

'' In this moment the two captains, if I can say captain, captain, captain, the same way last year we had Drogba, Petr and John, this season I would say this year we have John and Ivanovic. Ivanovic is more than ready to be a big captain too; more than ready: lots of experience, lots of years at Chelsea, his personality, his character, the respect that he has from the other guys. In John and Ivanovic we have two fantastic captains. And after that we have people that come behind. (Gary) Cahill, lots of years at Chelsea, also vice-captain in the England national team. Good personality, good example.

''(John Obi) Mikel is, after John, the guy with most years of Chelsea. I think (Cesc) Fabregas has personality for a captain too. Eden is coming with big status now and was voted one of the top 10 players in Europe last year. In my opinion he should be in the top three not in the top 10. Let's see what is going to happen but we have these people. But let's say John and Branislav are our captains and the others are ready to come,'' he said.

Reuters: NATO backs Turkey on Islamic State, some urge peace with Kurds

NATO gave Turkey its full political support in fighting militants in Syria and Iraq at an emergency meeting on Tuesday but several nations urged Ankara not to undermine the Kurdish peace process by using excessive military force.

Following a 90-minute meeting in Brussels, Turkey won the backing it sought for stepping up its role in the U.S.-led fight against Islamic State with air strikes.

Ankara made no request to its 27 allies for military help and NATO Secretary-General Jens Stoltenberg noted that it had the second-largest army in the alliance.
